I'm a poor chess player but I know a good chess program when I see one, and Sigma Chess HIARCS is definitely one of them.
Sigma Chess HIARCS is a challenging and elegant chess program for Mac, which features many different facets and perspectives. These include many most users will probably never or understand, such as an optional HIARCS engine, UCI Engine support and Databases and PGN/EPDnovice levels. Most importantly however, it has a true perspective 3D board and lots of levels to tax your brain.
This is actually the free version of Sigma Chess HIARCS and you'll find that some of the more advanced features are either disabled or limited. The rest of the game provides free, unlimited use of the game, though. One problem with Sigma Chess is that the recent introduction of the HIARCS engine means that it does tend to consume a huge amount of CPU. Fortunately, this is optional and you can disable it. Also, because it hasn't been specifically designed for use on Intel Macs, those using the latest generation of Macs may experience some sluggishness.
The fact that Sigma Chess HIARCS is free, combined with the fact that it offers many different levels, make it an excellent choice for Chess fans.
